The whole reason I bought a BOOX was that it runs Android. I’ve got Kindle books, Kobo purchases, and library loans all in different ecosystems, and I wanted one device that could handle all of them. After a year of experimenting, here’s what actually earns a spot on my home screen.
Reading apps that matter
The Kindle app works surprisingly well on e-ink given that it wasn’t designed for it. Whispersync keeps my place across my phone and the BOOX, and page-turn animations can be disabled in the app’s own settings. The Kobo app is similar — not quite as smooth as on a real Kobo, but fully functional for my Kobo library. Libby is the one I use most: borrow library books, download them, read for two weeks, return. It just works.
Moon+ Reader is the app that made me stop missing my old Kindle. It handles every format I throw at it — EPUB, MOBI, PDF — and has granular control over fonts, margins, line spacing, and color temperature. The scrolling animation is the one thing you need to turn off immediately or the e-ink ghosting will drive you nuts. Readwise Reader is a newer addition for me; it syncs highlights and annotations across devices, which makes it great if you’re the type who actually wants to remember what you read.
The browser nobody talks about
EinkBro is a niche browser built specifically for e-ink screens. It strips out unnecessary animations, defaults to reader view, and lets you scroll with volume buttons. Standard Chrome on a BOOX is painful — EinkBro is dramatically better and it’s free.
Making the home screen less chaotic
BOOX’s default launcher is functional but ugly. I installed Nova Launcher, switched to a monochrome icon pack, set the grid to something minimal (3×4), and suddenly the device felt like a purposeful reading tool instead of a slow Android tablet. The gesture to open the app drawer with a swipe keeps the home screen clean.
E-ink optimization is non-negotiable
The single most important thing: go into the BOOX E-Ink Center for every app you install and set the refresh mode. For reading apps, use Regal mode — it fully refreshes on each page turn and eliminates ghosting entirely. For anything you scroll through (browsers, RSS feeds), use Speed mode and accept that there’ll be some ghosting as a trade-off. Also, turn off animations system-wide in Android’s accessibility settings and force any app that supports it into dark mode — not for battery, but because animations on e-ink look like a flickering mess. Every app I mention above has a way to disable them.
